The RM Sotheby’s Monaco Sale, held on May 10 and 11, Included a highly desirable selection of cars that have competed in various rally and track motorsports events. Here is our selection of the cars on offer.

1985 Lancia Delta S4 Rally

Estimate: €800,000 – €1,000,000 :: Sold at €837,500

RM Sothebys Monaco Sale 2024 - 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Rally

This 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Rally was driven to 2nd place in its competition debut at the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally in Wales. This wonderful rally legend presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the few Delta S4s with World Rally Championship podium finishes. Other race highlights include Fabrizio Tabaton’s 1st place at the 1986 Halkidiki Rally, in the season that the Italian driver won the European Rally Championship.

This car is offered with substantial workshop invoices spanning 2010 to 2018 and accompanied by its Abarth Classiche certification. This storied Delta S4 Rally has been returned to its period-correct Works configuration complete with iconic Martini livery.

1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale by Bertone

This stunning 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale by Bertone example was no one that saw competition, but it is a model with a celebrated rally heritage. Presented in a desirable unrestored condition, it has had just four owners from new and displays fewer than 12,000 kilometres on its odometer. Accompanied by a certification folder issued by Lancia Classiche in 2020, this well-preserved example presents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally original Stratos HF.

2008 Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT2

Estimate: €750,000 – €950,000

One of just 10 examples of the V8 Vantage GT2 produced by Aston Martin Racing between 2008 and 2011. This factory development prototype was driven by Aston Martin Racing drivers including Darren Turner, Tomáš Enge, Stefan Mucke and Allan Simonsen.

It secured class wins at the Nogaro and Zolder rounds of the 2008 FIA GT Championship, and participated as a works entry in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Allan Simonsen, Christoffer Nygaard, and Kristian Poulsen. It underwent a comprehensive rebuild and recommissioning by Pursuit Racing in 2023 and 2024, including the fitment of a new engine and a newly rebuilt gearbox and differential.

1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2

Estimate: €500,000 – €700,000 :: Sold at €635,000

One of just 20 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2s ever built, it debuted in the 1986 Rallye de Portugal, driven by two-time WRC champion Walter Röhrl. It also contested in the 1989 and 1990 Race Of Champions (ROC), and demonstrated at 11 other ROC events. It also competed in Swedish hill climb events and Rallycross Championships in 1990.

It has been driven by WRC Champions Björn Waldegård, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, and Carlos Sainz as well as WRC runner-up Michèle Mouton. The car’s bonnet has been signed by many of its former drivers. The car has been in current ownership since 1991 and is road-registered in the principality of Monaco.

2011 Citroën DS3 WRC

Estimate: €450,000 – €700,000 :: Sold at €480,000

This car is believed to be one of just 13 Works DS3 WRCs constructed between 2011 and 2016. It achieved four WRC wins with Sébastien Ogier in 2011, securing 1st place in Portugal, Acropolis, Germany, and France-Alsace. Driven by Mikko Hirvonen in four WRC events in 2012, it secured 2nd place in Argentina and New Zealand.

It also contested seven further WRC events between 2015 and 2017, driven by Stéphane Lefebvre, Khalid Al Qassimi, and Quentin Gilbert. The car was serviced in 2019 by leading Rally preparation specialists PH Sport of Langres, France. It features late-specification engine, aerodynamics kit, suspension and paddle shift-actuated gearchange.

1981 Porsche 924 GTS Club Sport ‘Group B’

Estimate: €260,000 – €320,000

Porsche built 406 examples of the 924 Carrera GT, a stripped-out and highly modified variant of its entry-level model for use in Group 4 racing. The 924 Carrera GTS, was an upgraded version with increased power (245 bhp) and reduced weight. Of the 50 924 Carrera GTS cars built, only 15 examples were built to the ‘Club Sport’ specification.

In addition to weight loss, its displacement increased to 2,093 cc and horsepower to 270, making this car a fearsome competitor on track. This particular example (chassis number 710021) was sold directly to Carlos Noce in Sassuolo, Italy, and was entered in a handful of rallies in Italy. The current owner acquired the car in 2000.

1982 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4

Estimate: €200,000 – €250,000

This car was built for Renault Sport and driven by Alain Prost and Jean-Marc Andrié in the 1982 Rallye du Var. It was later re-bodied with a new shell and chassis number following an accident. It then campaigned in 28 rallies between 1983 and 1988 by former owner Michel Neri, with two victories and 12 podiums, including a 3rd in class and 7th overall in the 1986 Tour de Corse.

The car has competed in multiple period events including the Rallye d’Antibes, Ronde Nationale de Corte, Critérium des Cévennes, and Tour de Corse. The car is currently finished in the Marlboro livery of Prost and Andrié, accompanied by a full report from Renault 5 expert Gilles Vallerian.
